You are a corporate trainer and you are about to design a virtual instructor-led training (VILT). What question would you ask yourself when designing the program?
Learning objectives?
Participants profile?
Program duration?
Number of participants?
Return of investment?
These are all good questions, but they are not the key question. You would have asked the same questions regardless online or offline programs anyways.
The key question to ask is: Why virtual instructor-led training?
You could flip the question over: Why not offline training? (Answer: Because of COVID-19)
Okay, I get that. But how about the more flexible, self-paced E-Learning approach? Learners are not bounded by specific time schedule and can learn whenever they want. Did I mention E-Learning programs cost much less to implement compared to VILT?
Ask yourself: Can I design this program in self-paced E-Learning format?
If yes, is VILT still necessary?
If no, then what’s the value-added of being instructor-led in real time? How do you realize this unique value?
This key question lets you crystalize the unique value of your chosen approach. Don’t do VILT because everyone else is doing it.
Asking the right question is like hitting the bullseye of the target.
